Fall Harvest Series: An Introduction

Food is one of the most important components of emergency survival gear. Humans throughout history have created recipes and methods of preserving food that can be used for winter months, years of low harvest and various emergency situations. In our series we will be introducing methods of preserving food from the autumn garden harvest and preservation recipes. In our Fall Harvest Series we will discuss:

canning, pickling, dehydration, fermentation, smoking, root cellar storage and more

Harvesting and using preservation techniques for food from your own garden or local farmer’s market is a great way to teach your children the traditions of the past and the importance of food storage and emergency survival gear. Having food that you have canned or pickled as a family really can help children to appreciate the importance of food storage items as a critical piece of a family’s survival gear. This month is National Emergency Preparedness month and we can’t think of a better time to kick off this series. If you have preservation methods that you would like us to discuss or any harvest recipes or techniques that you would like to share we would love to hear from you!
